Maatilojen muovit kiertoon

The purpose of the project is to find a sustainable solution for how the plastic waste generated on farms and horticulture can be recycled and reprocessed cost-effectively. The need for the project is business-oriented. Primary producers are committed to development work and want a coordinated solution to an economically and environmentally significant problem.

Around 21 million tons of waste are generated annually on farms and gardens in Finland, of which plastic waste accounts for around 12,000 tons (Circwaste, 2020). Large amounts of discarded plastic are currently mostly unused, as only specific fractions are collected. Most plastics are burned, so their recycling rate is very low.

Primary production plastics are often dirty, so new solutions must be found for their sorting, processing and storage on farms and in possible intermediate warehouses, so that the plastics are suitable for reprocessing and do not end up in incineration. There are several companies in Finland that are ready to receive and process agricultural plastics, but the plastics must meet the acceptance criteria. Plastics must be sorted, preferably packed and sufficiently cleaned. As a result, the key areas of development are the identification of different plastic grades as well as sorting, processing and storage in farms and gardens, as well as in possible interim warehouses.

The partners of the project are Lake Finland MTK Etelä-Savo, Southeast Finland, Central Finland and North Karelia as well as Suomen Uusiomuovi Oy, Wimao Oy, Clean Plastic Finland Oy, Eastern Finland Murskauskeskus Oy and Muoviteollisuus ry. In addition, the project cooperates with the cooperation areas of the rural administration, ProAgria and educational institutions in the area of ??natural resources, as well as with other recycling-related projects such as TREASoURcE and PlastLIFE SIP.
